Kayama Tunnel花山トンネルEP 82026-05-25It can be regarded as one of the possible prototypes of the "Tohzan Tunnel" in volume 1 of the novel. Hanayama Tunnel is located on the border between Higashiyama Ward and Yamashina Ward in Kyoto City. After the Higashiyama Tunnel, which bypasses Route 1's Gojo section, opened in 1967, Hanayama Tunnel was converted into a pedestrian tunnel. Its location in Higashiyama and replacement by the Gojo bypass match the novel's description of the Tohzan Tunnel, but construction date and length do not. The novel says the Tohzan Tunnel is on a mountain road that detours around the national route, which fits the Yamanakagoe road (also called Shigagoe, Kyoto Prefectural Route / Shiga Prefectural Route 30, Shimogamo-Otsu Line) crossing the mountains to the north, but that road has no tunnel along its entire length. It is possible the author fictionalized a tunnel on the Yamanakagoe road as the Tohzan Tunnel.
