In the eighth month of the fourth year of the Shaoding era under Emperor Lizong of the Southern Song (1231), Tolui asked to pass through Southern Song territory to attack the Jin, but was refused. He then broke through Fengzhou from Dasan Pass, massacred the people of Yangzhou, and in the eleventh month attacked Raofeng Pass.
