Sovetsky, Komi

2025-11-30

The setting of this work is a closed Soviet city (ZATO). The author mentions in an art book that the prototype of Volkuta-5 is the abandoned coal mining settlement Sovetsky (Советский) in Vorkuta, Komi Republic, Russia. It lost its administrative status in 2002, all residents were relocated in 2021, and the town is currently off-limits. This background image is the Palace of Culture (Дом Культуры), photographed facing east from Volynov Street (улица Волынова) in the town center.
