AngaurEP 1315:382024-06-29Near the end of World War II, US forces attacked Angaur Island from September 17 to 30, 1944. Japanese soldier Funesaka Hiroshi (船坂弘) wounded or killed more than a hundred American soldiers in combat. Funesaka himself suffered five serious wounds: a laceration to the left thigh, two gunshot wounds to the left upper arm, a scalp abrasion, and a penetrating gunshot wound to the left abdomen. He was eventually captured, returned to Japan after the war, and died at age 85. The prototype of the Demon Sergeant, the martyred prisoner in this work, is Funesaka Hiroshi.
