Shimizu Tunnel清水トンネルPassing through the long tunnel at the prefectural border brings you to Snow Country. The JR Joetsu Line still runs there, but when travelling from Tokyo to Niigata by the Joetsu Shinkansen, you actually pass through the longer Ōshimizu Tunnel, opened in 1982.
