Kamijima神島The remote island I live on faces the Pacific Ocean. Its population is only in the hundreds. I'd guess about five hundred people. From elementary through junior high there is only one class in total; the regular ferry to the island runs just four trips a day; and it takes only about two hours to go all the way around the island. As for accommodations for sightseers, there used to be two minshuku, but both have now closed. There is only the one ATM at the post office, and of course there is no convenience store. There are only three or four restaurants, which can be counted in no time. Unfortunately, there are no talking scarecrows here (*from 'The Prayer of Audubon'), and it is not some unknown hidden paradise. ——'I Was Also in Love with Him Yesterday' Chapter 1: Looking Back and Giving Everything / Long ago a novel was set on this island (*'The Sound of Waves'), so the island suddenly became a tourist attraction. Some rumors say a god lives on the island, or that time seems to stand still, but neither I, nor my father, nor my grandmother, who have lived on the island since before I can remember, have ever met a god. I secretly suspect the gods moved to the city long ago. ——'I Was Also in Love with Him Yesterday' Chapter 1 / This island used to be called God Island. I remember my grandmother telling me so. At some point it was renamed Needle Island, but in my grandmother's grandmother's generation it was reportedly still called God Island. ——'I Will Fall in Love with Him Again Tomorrow' Chapter 8: Island of God
