Command organ of the Imperial Japanese Army in WWII. The building shown is the former General Staff Office building completed in 1881 (Meiji 14). The General Staff Office itself moved to Ichigaya in 1941 (Showa 16), together with the Army Ministry and other agencies, after the Pacific War began. The building that stood here was demolished after the war; the site is now the North Garden of the National Diet forecourt, and only one structure remains: the Japan Benchmark (Nihon Suijun Genten) building of the Land Survey Department under the General Staff.
